Here is a detailed, step-by-step method to format a Microsoft Word document using JAWS screen reader:
Open your Word document and make sure JAWS is running.
To select the text you want to format, use the arrow keys to move the cursor, then hold down Shift and use the arrow keys to select the desired text.
To apply a heading style (for example, Heading 1, Heading 2, or Heading 3):
For Heading 1, press Ctrl+Alt+1.
For Heading 2, press Ctrl+Alt+2.
For Heading 3, press Ctrl+Alt+3.
To browse more styles, press Alt+H, L, then use the arrow keys to find the style you want and press Enter to apply it.
To change font properties (such as font, size, color, or effects):
With your text selected, press Alt+H, F, N to open the Font dialog box.
Use the following shortcuts within the dialog:
Change font: Press Alt+F, then use the arrow keys.
Change font style: Press Alt+Y, then use the arrow keys.
Change font size: Press Alt+S, then use the arrow keys.
Change font color: Press Alt+C, then use the arrow keys and press Enter.
Underline style: Press Alt+U, then use the arrow keys and press Enter.
Underline color: Press Alt+I, then use the arrow keys and press Enter.
Strikethrough: Press Alt+K.
Double strikethrough: Press Alt+L.
Superscript: Press Alt+P.

To add page numbers:
Press Alt+N, N, U to open the Page Number menu.
Use the Down arrow key to choose the location (top, bottom, margin).
Press Enter to select, then use the Down arrow key to choose the style and press Enter.
If the header or footer pane opens, press Esc to return to the document.
To navigate by headings (if you have used heading styles):
Press Alt+W, K to open the Navigation Pane.
Press Tab until you hear the selected tab, then use the Left arrow key until you hear “Headings.”
Use Tab or Shift+Tab to browse headings, and press Enter to move to a heading in the document.
